You've met with a few agencies. How do you know which one is right for you?

A grounded, honest guide to choosing a surrogacy agency, from a team that would rather you find the right fit than simply pick us.

The Right Agency?

Let's start with something you don't often hear from an agency: the right one for you might not be Roots, and that is completely okay.

Choosing a surrogacy agency is one of the most personal decisions you'll make on this journey. You deserve to make it with clear eyes, good information, and zero pressure. Instead of a list of reasons to choose us, here is how we'd encourage you to think it through, no matter where you land.

By the time most intended parents reach this point, they've had a few calls and collected a few pricing sheets. Some of those conversations probably fell flat, and a couple likely stood out as genuinely capable. That's where the quiet worry sets in: once you've narrowed it to the agencies that seem good, how do you actually tell them apart?

The good news is that agencies differ in real, knowable ways once you know where to look. Here's what actually matters.

What to look for in any agency

Track record and experience

Ask how long they've been operating, how many journeys they support in a year, and who on the team you'll actually be working with. Longevity matters because surrogacy is full of moments that only experience prepares you for. A newer agency isn't disqualified, but you want to understand who is guiding you and how many journeys they've personally seen through.

Transparency, especially about money

You should be able to see a clear, itemized breakdown of every cost before you sign anything: the agency fee, surrogate compensation, medical and legal expenses, escrow, and what happens to your money if a journey doesn't go as planned. If pricing feels vague or a number keeps shifting, that is worth paying attention to. A trustworthy agency will welcome your hardest financial questions rather than steer around them.

How they match, and how long it takes

Matching is the heart of the process, and it's where agencies genuinely differ. Ask how surrogates are screened, how a match is made, how much say you have, and what a realistic wait time looks like right now. Be a little cautious of anyone promising an unusually fast match, and equally cautious of vague answers. Honest wait times are a sign of an honest agency.

The level of support you'll actually feel

There is a real difference between an agency that processes your journey and one that walks it with you. Ask what support looks like on an ordinary week and on a hard day. Who picks up the phone when something goes sideways at 9pm? How do they support your surrogate, since her wellbeing directly shapes your experience? High touch service isn't a slogan, it's whether you feel held for the full length of the journey.

Clinic and legal relationships

Strong, established relationships with clinics and attorneys make a real difference in how smoothly things move. Ask which clinics and clinical systems they work with, whether they can work with your existing clinic, and how legal contracts are handled. Years of relationship-building behind the scenes is often what separates a seamless journey from a bumpy one.

How they make you feel

Trust your read on this. You are about to share one of the most tender chapters of your life with these people. Do they listen more than they pitch? Do they answer the question you actually asked? Do you feel like a family to them, or a number? Warmth you can feel is not a small thing. It's often the difference between surviving a journey and being supported through it.

Questions worth asking on every call

Bring the same questions to each agency you speak with. Comparing their answers side by side tells you far more than any brochure will.

  • How many journeys do you complete in a year, and how many are active right now?
  • What is your current realistic wait time for a match?
  • Can I see a full, itemized cost breakdown, including what happens if a transfer fails or a match falls through?
  • How do you screen and support surrogates?
  • Who will be my main point of contact, and how do I reach them when something urgent comes up?
  • Which clinics and attorneys do you work with, and can you work with mine?
  • Can I speak with intended parents who have finished a journey with you?

Where Roots fits in, honestly

We'll tell you plainly who we are, and you can decide whether it fits what you're looking for.

Roots Surrogacy is a mid-sized agency, established in 2015, that supports around 150 journeys a year. Over the last decade we've grown into one of the more respected and connective agencies in the country, and we work with all the major clinics and clinical systems in the United States. We've spent years building those relationships for one reason: to make the process more seamless for the families we serve. What we care most about is transparency, real connection, and a level of care you can actually feel from the first call to the day you bring your baby home.

That said, we know we're not the only good option, and we'd never want you to choose us simply because we were warm on a call. If something above described exactly what you're hoping for, we would love to talk, and if another agency turns out to be the better fit for your family, we will genuinely be glad you found it.

No pressure and no pitch. Just an honest conversation about your journey, your questions, and whether Roots is the right home for it.
